Serious Health Problems, Low Income, Mounting Bills
Curtis’ Story
A Mason Helped By Donations Like Yours
“I had diabetes, heart problems, and every month it was a struggle to pay the rent on my apartment. At TMRC, I have my own apartment, I don’t have to worry about my electric bill, groceries, or rent. It’s 100% better for me.”
— Curtis
At age 80, Curtis faced more rough roads than those he drove as a long haul truck driver.
“I had diabetes, heart problems, and every month it was a struggle to pay the rent on my apartment,” he said.
In addition to these age-related challenges, Curtis has dealt with severe hearing loss for most of his life.
The family tradition of Masonic involvement was vital to meeting these challenges. Curtis served as an active member of Bullard Lodge #785. His son, Tony participates in Athens Lodge #165 and Hella Shrine in Dallas.
As every day life worsened for his dad, Tony stepped in to help his father.
“I brought my dad to meet with the folks at Texas Masonic Retirement Community. As I listened I thought, ‘This is why I became a Mason. This is what it means to be a brother and part of the Masonic family.’”
“I’m overwhelmed with all they offer me here at TMRC. I have my own apartment. I don’t have to worry about my electric bill, groceries, or rent. It’s 100% better for me.”
With a shy smile, Curtis added, “Living here really is just like that motto—‘No Mason Left Behind.’ ”
The No Mason Left Behind Project helps provide older Texas Masons and their qualified loved ones with all-inclusive 24 hour a day/7 days a week accommodations at Texas Masonic Retirement Community--including medical services and nursing care. The cost of these benefits exceeds $2.5 million annually.
